11. Acts 14:23. They ordained elders in each church.

12. Acts 14:23. It is scriptural for a church to have only one elder.

NOTE: In the first century, it is evident that in the New Testament elder (presbyter), bishop (overseer), and pastor refer to the same group of men (Acts 20:17; Phil. 1:1; Eph. 4:11. (cf. Schaff's HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH, Vol. I, pp 491-493).

13. Acts 20:30. Paul said some among elders would arise speaking perverse things.

NOTE: The first major apostasy from The New Testament order came in the second century AD. One elder was raised above the other elders and called THE BISHOP. He had authority over the elders. This was a gradual change, but it resulted in other changes which brought about a centralizing effect pointing the way to the first pope. (cf. Schaff, Vol. I, p. 494, and Vol. II, pp 144-161). It took many years to develop the papacy. The first pope being set in place in the first part of the seventh century AD. (cf. Schaff, Vol. III, pp 299-302).

14. I Pet. 5:1-3. Elders are to tend only the flock of God among them.

15. Acts 20:28. Elders feed only the church over which they are overseers.

16. Gal. 1:8,9. To raise one elder over the other elders and call him bishop is to practice a perverted gospel.

NOTE: To this apostasy were added many other things not found in the word of God. Not everyone approved of these additions. By the sixteenth century The Roman Catholic Church was selling indulgences (permission to commit certain sins). One person who stood firmly against this practice was a German monk, Martin Luther, who on October 31, 1517, nailed, or had nailed, his 95 theses on indulgences to the doors of the castle-church in Wittenburg, Germany. Some call this the birthday of the Reformation. (Schaff, Vol. VII, pp 155-160). This resulted in his excommunication from the Catholic Church (Schaff, Vol. VII, pp 220-252).

NOTE: Luther's excommunication from the Catholic Church did not keep him from study, teaching, and writing. His work resulted in the Lutheran church.

17. John 17:20,21. Jesus prayed that believers might be divided.

18. John 17:20,21. Jesus prayed that believers might be one.

19. I Cor. 1:10. Paul was pleased with the division in Corinth.

20. I Cor. 1:10. Paul commanded the Corinthians to be of the same mind. Yes No

21. Eph. 4:3. Paul commanded the Ephesians to keep the unity of the Spirit.

22. Eph. 4:3. Paul commanded the Ephesians to be divided.

23. Prov. 6:16-19. God is pleased with one who sows discord.

24. Prov. 6:16-19. God hates one who sows discord.

NOTE. During the Reformation religious creeds multiplied, resulting in modern denominationalism. The voice of Reformation history shows that the Lutheran, Episcopalian, and Presbyterian Churches started in the 1500's. The Baptist Church started in the 1600's and the Methodist Church in the 1700's. The Mormon Church and the Jehovah's Witnesses started in the 1800's.

25. Rev. 22:18,19. God will allow us to change His law.

26. Rev. 22:18,19. God will not allow us to change His law.

3. Did this small change result in the formation of the Roman Catholic Church?

4. Did the Reformation result in the formation of many churches?

5. Does this religious division please God?

6. Would it please God for believers to be united on the Bible?
